Quantitative research methods

Telephone interviewing – CATI

  • Computer assisted telephone interviewing is one of the basic and most common methods of gathering data. To execute such interviewing special programming equipment is needed for programming the questionnaire in the electronic form.
  • Mediana has its own telephone studio with about 25 working stations.
  • Supervisors are present at each project to oversee the technical flawlessness of work and also control the content of the interviewer’s work.
  • CATI advantages:
    • Automatic answers filtering from previous questions.
    • Automatic filtering and answers checking.
    • Complete focus of the interviewer on the importance of question contents and answers.
    • Direct input of data – immediate entering of data.
    • Immediate availability of data.

Personal interviewing - PAPI / CAPI

  • Personal interviewing is used for longer and more complex questionnaire, because explaining the topic and answering any possible questions to the respondent is much simpler. Besides that, additional utensils such as pictures, samples, video or audio contents can be used. There are personal interviewing – PAPI – where the interviewer records the answers to a sheet of paper, and computer assisted interviewing – CAPI – where the interviewer records the answers into a specially designed computer program.
  • Advantages of personal interviewing:
    • More ideal answers, because the probability of wrongful interpretation of questions and answers is less likely.
    • Possibility of audio-visual utensils usage.
    • Appropriate for longer and more demanding research.

Web interviewing – CAWI / CASI

  • Computer assisted web interviewing is conducted by respondents filling out the questionnaires through a specially created and designed web spot. As in personal interviewing, audio-visual utensils can be used in web interviewing.
  • At Mediana, we have our own we panel with almost 8.000 respondents, who participate in research on a regular basis and are rewarded for their contributions.
  • Advantages of web interviewing:
    • Target interviewing of selected target group.
    • Respondent fills out the questionnaire personally, so there are no errors in data input – immediate recording of data.
    • Immediate availability of data.
    • Appropriate for longer and more demanding research.

Postal interviewing

  • Postal interviewing means the respondent is sent the questionnaire by post. He fills it out himself and returns it to the sender by post.
  • Advantages of postal interviewing are:
    • No possible influence of the interviewer.
    • Appropriate for longer and more demanding research.

Interviewing with mobile technology – MASI/MAI

  • Interviewing with mobile phones is an innovative and attractive method for interviewing in events, where quantity of the sample is important. Application is loaded onto mobile phone and used for the interviewer or respondent to fill out the questionnaire.
  • Advantages of mobile interviewing:
    • No possibility of error in data input – immediate recording of data.
    • Immediate availability of data.
    • Appropriate for shorter and less demanding research.
